Working with Kids
Kids love to spend time with you and are always interested in doing projects. Here are some hints that come in handy when working with kids.
- Supervise your child closely when using sharp instruments like scissors and pins. Keep those objects out of reach of smaller children.
- While they cannot cut, pin or sew young children feel very useful when asked to help. The very young can sort materials by color or size or hold the measuring tape in place while you measure.
- Encourage older children to accompany you to the fabric store and make their own fabric and trim choices. To avoid being overwhelmed make a few initial choices for them (type of fabric for example) and then let them pick a color. Let them experiment.
- Divide the project into a series of steps. Children have short attention spans and they will feel more productive and successful if the job is broken into easy to handle sections of time, no longer than one hour for the smaller kids. For example, cut and mark one day. Sew the next. Embellish and finish the third.
- Keep in mind, this is fun. Don't place any undue pressure on yourself or your child to create the perfect project or to finish in a day. Just relax and enjoy each others company and remember, what you are really making is a memory.
