Fabrics
- 1/2 yd. Pale Aqua
- 1 yd. Blue and Purple Mottled Print
- 1/2 yd. Dark Purple
- 1/2 yd. Purple Batik
- 1 yd. Backing
- 1 yd. Batting

Stitch a flying goose unit using a pale aqua Companion Angle triangle and the two dark purple Easy Angle triangles (illustration 2). Press towards the Easy Angle triangles, and trim the "dog ears". Repeat to make twenty units. Use the purple batik Easy Angle triangles with the remaining sixteen pale aqua Companion Angle triangles to complete the flying goose units of the second color combination.

Add a pale aqua square to each end of ten flying goose units made with dark purple Easy Angles (illustration 3). Add a pale aqua square to each end of eight flying goose units made with batik Easy Angles. Press towards the squares.

Stitch the remaining flying geese units to the sides of the block centers. Match the color of the Easy Angles in the flying goose units with the Easy Angles in the center squares. Press towards the center square. Complete the star as shown in the diagram (illustration 4), pressing the final seams open.

Assemble pieced rectangles using a pale aqua Tri-Mate triangle with a pair of blue and purple mottled Recs triangles (illustration 5). Press towards the Recs triangles. Repeat to make twenty of this color combination. The second color combination uses pale aqua Tri-Mate triangles with dark purple Recs triangles. Repeat to make sixteen of this color combination.

Sew a blue and purple mottled square to each end of ten of the pieced rectangles made with the blue and purple mottled fabric as the Recs triangles (illustration 6). Add a dark purple square to each end of eight pieced rectangles made with the dark purple Recs triangles. Press towards the squares.

Add these pieced rectangles to the sides of the stars, completing the block as shown (illustration 7).

Assemble wall hanging by sewing the nine blocks together in horizontal rows of three, alternating the two colors of blocks, pressing the seams open. Join the rows to complete the quilt center.

Stitch a batik narrow border to a wider blue and purple mottled border strip. Repeat to make 4 pieced borders. Add these borders to the sides, top and bottom edges of the quilt. Stop the stitching 1/4" from the corner. Miter the corners and trim the excess border length. Press towards each border.

Using the single fold bias tape, applique a vine gently curving as desired around the border of the quilt. Applique various leaves in a random manner along the vine.

Quilt as desired, bind with single fold, straight of grain binding made from 1 1/4" strips of the blue and purple mottled fabric.

Appliqué Technique
Tools:

• Appliqué Sharps
• Recessed top thimble
• Needle threader
• Bamboo Pointer and Creaser
• Sharp, fine pins
• No Melt Mylar template plastic
• Sharp pencil or fine point fabric marker for marking appliqué placement (silver or white works well for dark fabrics, gray for lighter fabrics)

To Appliqué:

1. Print out Pattern.
2. Trace appliqué pattern onto no melt template plastic. Cut along line.
3. Place the appliqué template onto right side of fabric. Lightly trace shape using fine point fabric marker or very sharp silver pencil.
4. Flip the template over and trace to get designs that face the opposite direction.
5. Cut out appliqué adding 1/4" seam allowance.
6. Crease seam allowance with Bamboo Pointer and Creaser.
7. Sew to fabric by hand using blind stitch or blanket stitch, or by machine using a decorative stitch.

Appliqué Tips

• Pin appliqués from the wrong side to avoid tangling the thread on pins.
• A small pillow in your lap will support the work and improve posture and can act as a pincushion as well when stitching by hand.
• Use thread to match the appliqué, not the background fabric.
• Stitches should be no farther apart than 1/8" - any farther and unsightly gaps may occur.
