General Directions
Read through instructions before beginning the project. Prewash and press fabric. Use an accurate 1/4" seam allowance unless noted otherwise.

Cutting Directions
For each block cut 2 1/2" strips for the claw and background, and 4 1/2" squares for the paw. Cut a 2 1/2" square for the center contrast square.

Block Construction
Begin by placing the claw and background fabrics right sides together. Cut 16 half square triangles with the Easy Angle. Sew these together. Now make two separate piles, the left side of the paw and the right side of the paw.

Illustration 1Sew these together into four sets of pairs as shown.

Illustration 2Cut four 2 1/2" squares of background color. Sew these to the top of the left claw units.

Illustration 3Sew the right side of the claws to the 4 1/2" paw square.

Illustration 4Bring these two units together to form a completed paw.

From the background color cut four 6 1/2" x 2 1/2" pieces.

Illustration 5Stitch the four paws to either side of two of these strips.

Illustration 6Finally, join the other strips to the 2 1/2" contrast square. Use this strip to join the top and bottom of the block.

Sashing Strips
Illustration 7Sashing strips are cut 4 1/2" x 14 1/2". Sew these pieces to the side of the Bear Paw block. The sashing strips will join your quilt together. You will need to add one more on the outside block. Note quilt diagram.

Illustration 8Make as many horizontal sashing strips as needed for your quilt. This is done by sewing the sashing pieces the long way with the squares between. Join the block strips with these.

Borders
Bear of the North quiltCarefully measure the edges of your quilt. Cut and add the border fabric.
2 1/2" accent border
3 1/2" outside border (small quilt)
5 1/2" outside border (twin or queen quilt)
Be sure that opposite borders are the same length. Add the first borders to the top and the bottom, then add the side. Repeat this process for each border.

Don't forget to sign and date your quilt!
Enjoy!
