Cutting Directions (Fence)
Illustration 1 A and BCut two 2" strips of white. Cut into ten rectangles measuring 2" x 6 1/2" for the fence slats.
Cut one 2" strip of white and blue sky fabric. Layer right sides together and cut ten Easy Angle triangles (see illustration 1A). Sew together, press, trim dog ears and sew to the tops of the fence slats (see illustration 1B).
Press towards the slats.

Cut two 1 1/4" strips of white.
From the medium floral fabric, cut one 3" strip and one 2" strip.
From blue sky fabric cut one 2 1/2" strip.
Illustration 2Sew the strips together in this order:
3" floral, 1 1/4" white, 2" floral, 1 1/4" white, 2 1/2" blue sky fabric (see illustration 2).
Press the seams towards the white fabrics. (NOTE: Press carefully so the strip set is not distorted.) Recut into nine 2" units.

Sew these units between the fence slats. Press towards the fence slats.
Cut a 14" x 29" (or length of the fence) rectangle of blue for the sky. Sew to the top of the fence unit and press.

Borders
From green polka dot or print cut one 5" x 29" (or length of the fence) strip. Sew to the bottom of the quilt. Cut two side borders measuring 5" x 11". Set aside.

From the blue polka dot cut four 2" strips.
From white, cut four 2" strips.
For Unit A, sew blue/white/blue strips together and press.
For Unit B, sew white/blue/white strips together and press.
Cut the remaining strips into three 12" strips. Sew one more Unit A and 1 more Unit B with the 12" strips. Press. Cut twenty three 2" Unit A pieces, and twenty two 2" Unit B pieces.

Illustration 3

For the top of the quilt, beginning with Unit B, sew nineteen units together to make the checkerboard border. Press. Sew to the top of the quilt, press.

For the sides of the quilt, beginning with Unit A, sew thirteen units together for each side. Press. Sew the 11" green borders to one end of both of the checkerboard side borders. Press. Sew to the sides of the quilt, press.

Flowers
From a variety of prints, make six flowers. Cut one flower from a 4" strip, two from 3 1/2" strips, and three from 2 1/2" strips. Follow the directions in the Easy Dresden package for cutting and sewing the flowers.

Position the flowers on the quilt. Baste in place. (NOTE: You can applique the edges of the flower down by hand or machine OR, baste them in place now, and quilt in the ditch between each petal later, leaving the edges open for a 3-dimensional look.) Cut six centers from yellow polka dot fabric. Applique or fuse the flower centers in place. (My favorite method is to cut the template circle from freezer paper, fuse to the wrong side of the flower center fabric. Cut out the circle adding a scant 1/4" seam allowance. Center the circle over the flower and stitch in place by hand, turning the seam allowance over the edge of the freezer paper template. When finished, slit the back and pull out the freezer paper.)
OPTIONAL: For more plumpness in the flower centers, cut a circle of batting using the circle template. Slip the circle of batting through the slit in the back of the flower, inside the seam allowances. Whip stitch the slit closed.

Finishing the Quilt
Cut backing and batting 4" larger than the quilt top. Layer and baste. Quilt as desired. Add the bumble bee appliques and stitch in the erratic flight of the bees.

Binding
Cut four 2" strips of blue polka dot for the binding. Join the strips with diagonal seams pressed open. Fold the binding in half wrong sides together and press. Sew the binding to the quilt, mitering corners.

Don't forget to sign and date your quilt!
Enjoy!
