Fabrics
- 3 1/2 yds. Black for borders, blocks, binding and backing.
- 1/3 yd. Gray/Blue for flowers and blocks
- 1/3 yd. Turquoise for flowers and blocks
- 1/2 yd. Magenta for flowers, blocks and borders
- 1/8 yd. Light Turquoise for borders and flower centers
- 1/4 yd. Light Blue for borders and flower centers
- 1/2 yd. Green for leaves and stems
- Scraps of Light Magenta, Gold and Light Gold for flower centers
- 2 yds. Fusible Webbing

Print out pattern and trace tulip shapes, stems, leaves, triangles and basket handles onto smooth side of the fusible webbing. Cut out along traced lines. (Seam allowance is not necessary for this type of appliqué (see our fusible appliqué tips below). Fuse to fabrics following illustration and cutting diagram. Cut motifs from fabrics.

Sewing Directions
Sew a magenta, turquoise and blue/gray strip together following photo for color placement. Make three sets of strips. Cut each strip into 10 1/2" blocks. Make ten blocks.

Peel paper backing of fusible webbing from tulip, stems and leaves. Position stems in center of black 6 1/2" x 10 1/2" rectangle; align stem and leaf bottoms with bottom of block. Following illustration, fuse in this order:
Stems
Leaves
Flower center
Tulip

When fusing is complete, stitch flowers in place using invisible thread and small zigzag stitch.

Peel backing of fusible webbing from basket handles and triangles. Following diagram, place on corner square 1/2" in from cut edge. Fuse and stitch in place using invisible thread and small zigzag stitch.

Quilt Assembly
Following photo, sew pieced blocks and appliquéd blocks in rows. Note: blocks are turned so the magenta strip is on the right of blocks in rows 2 and 4.

Add 1 3/4" light blue strips to sides, then to top and bottom for first border. Measure side borders, sew 6 1/2" black strip for outer border and stitch to quilt. Measure top and bottom border, cut and/or piece 6 1/2" strip to that measurement.

Sew a corner basket block to each end of a strip. Note direction of basket on photo. Stitch top and bottom border to quilt. (Note: If desired, four 3/4" strips from magenta may be appliquéd to outer borders 3/4" from the outside edge before stitching).

Layer and quilt as desired.

Fusible Appliqué Technique Tips

• To save time, fuse all designs using same fabric at once.
• Before fusing to quilt, check placement of all elements of the appliquéd block. Now is the time to make any changes!
• Seam allowance is not necessary for fused motifs, although a 1/4" overlap may be desired where a piece is to be placed underneath another piece (For example, see tulip center in Amish Tulips).
• Invisible thread is great for stitching around the edges of fused appliqué.
