Directions
Cut 5 large kites, 7 medium kites, and 9 small kites from the dark fabric.
First, cut on the outside of the kite tool and then turn the fabric over, place the cut lines on the matching lines on the tool and then cut the outside lines (illus. 1).
When cutting just a few KITES, it is better to cut each KITE out individually.
Cut background pieces for each block using the SMALL TRIANGLE and the EXTENDED TRIANGLE from the 5 lights for all KITE blocks. Cut these pieces in pairs so that there is a right and a left triangle piece (illus. 2 - refer to kite tool). Sew all the kite blocks as directed on the tool package. Remember to use 1/4" seams and match all seam intersections. Press the seams toward the kite.
Cut seven 2 1/2" strips from the white (or background) fabric. Measure the height of the large kite block. Cut 4 sashing strips this size. Sew sashing strips between large kite blocks (figure 3). Press seams toward the kite block. Measure the length of the large kite block strip and cut four 2 1/2" pieces this length. Center the strip on the large kite strip, match the outside edges and sew on the bottom of the large kite strip. Repeat this step for the top of the large kite strip (illus. 4). Follow illus. 3 and illus. 5 with medium kite blocks.
Cut three 1 1/2" white (or background) strips. Measure the height of the medium size kite blocks. Cut 6 sashing strips from the 1 1/2" strips. Sew these
between the medium size blocks. Press seams toward the kite blocks. Sew 2 1/2" sashing strip on top of the medium block strip, then sew the medium kite strip to the top of the large kite strip.
Measure the height of the small kite block. Follow figure 3 and add 1 strip to each end of the small kite strip.
Cut 10 pieces this size from the 1 1/2" strips. Sew these strips between the small kite blocks and on the end of each small kite strip. Center this strip and sew onto the top of the medium kite strip.
THERE WILL BE SOME EXCESS ON EACH END - TRIM IT AWAY TO BE EVEN WITH THE REST OF THE PIECE.
Sew one pre-cut sashing strip to the top of the small kite strip, and the last two sashing strips to the sides of the complete quilt piece. Press.
Cut all the remaining colored pieces into 2 1/2" strips. Trim the ends to a 45° angle going in the same direction on both ends (illus. 6).
Arrange these around the kite quilt. Sew pieces together and sew onto the quilt. Miter the corners.
Cut: four 3" strips and sew on as the final border. Layer quilt with batting and then the backing fabric. Quilt and bind.
Don't forget to sign and date your quilt!
