Illustration 1Treetop Tiers: Sew a Recs triangle cut from the background fabric to the left side of a Tri-Mate triangle cut from the lighter treetop fabric. Press the seam allowances toward the darker fabric. Complete the unit by adding a Recs triangle cut from the background fabric to the right side of the Tri-Mate triangle. Press the seam allowances as before. Repeat to make a total of nine pieced treetop tiers.

Illustration 2Treetop Unit: stitch three pieced treetop tiers together to make the boughs of the tree block. Press the seam allowances upward, toward the top of the block.

Tree Trunk: Stitch a tree trunk square between two tree trunk background rectangles.

Illustration 4Stitch a treetop and tree trunk unit together; press toward the top of the block. Each Pine Tree unit should measure 4 1/2" square, including seam allowances.

Illustration 5Framing Triangles: Sew an Easy Angle triangle to opposite sides of the tree blocks, lining up the center of the pieced block with the point of the Easy Angle so equal amounts hang out over the sides. Press the seam allowances toward the Easy angle triangles. Sew an Easy Angle triangle to the remaining sides in the same manner, and press as before. Trim the blocks, squaring them up and leaving just 1/4" seam allowance beyond the background fabric corners of the Pine Tree block. Each block at this point should measure 5 3/4" square.

Illustration 6Assembly
Arrangement: Referring to the illustration at right, arrange the Pine Tree blocks in a vertical row. Fill in with setting triangles.

Sewing & Pressing: Stitch the blocks and setting triangles together in diagonal rows. Press the seam allowances open. Stitch the rows together; press the seam allowances all in one direction. Trim the edges of the quilt center square, leaving just 1/4" beyond the corners of the blocks.

Borders
Inner Border: Using the same fabric as for the tree trunks, piece the 2" strips as needed to obtain the inner borders of the required length. First stitch these to the sides, trimming the ends even with the quilt center. Press seam allowances toward the border. Add inner borders to the top and bottom and press as before.

Outer Border: Add the wider border strips in the same way as for the inner border.
